Prime Minister backs Green Echo Campaign
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has given his official approval to an Express & Echo campaign to reduce the number of plastic bags used by shoppers, and cut excess packaging.
At 10 Downing Street, Mr Brown signed the newspapers Green Shoppers campaign pledge to cut down on plastic carrier bag usage in the city.
Mr Brown, who also signed one of the newspapers reusable jute bags named My Green Bag, said: "Twenty per cent of all the rubbish put out by the typical household is packaging waste. Across the country, it adds up to 10 million tonnes each year.
"Retailers need to do more to reduce needless packaging and we all should do more to reduce the number of shopping bags we use.
"That's why I applaud the Green Shoppers campaign, which encourages individuals and retailers to take action that really makes a difference.
"The whole city of Exeter should be proud of the work being done by local businesses and local people, and I want to congratulate the Express & Echo for leading the way."
Supported by the Exeter City Council, EDF Energy and the Tidy Exeter Group, the campaign aims to cut plastic bag usage by encouraging shoppers to re-use plastic carrier bags, or use eco-friendly alternatives such as My Green Bag.
It is estimated that up to 10,000 eco-friendly bags will be in use by next month and the campaign, which also features a Christmas competition for kids to design green bags, is on course to have saved at least eight million plastic bags by next summer.
Echo editor Marc Astley, who went to 10 Downing Street to meet the PM last week, added: "I very much welcome the Prime Minister's support. It not only demonstrates the universal appeal of the Green Shoppers campaign but also the power of the regional press.
"Together, the Echo, its partners and, most importantly, its readers have sent out a powerful message that is being taken seriously at the very highest level."
